A tank heater is sized by capacity and recovery rate: how much hot water it holds and how fast it makes more. Most families do well at 40–50 gallons, but a house with two showers running before work needs recovery as much as volume, and gas recovers faster than standard electric. A tankless unit is sized by flow rate instead — gallons per minute across the fixtures you’d run at once. We ask about your household before we quote, because the wrong size is the most common installation mistake we see.
Replacing a water heater in Austin and the surrounding cities requires a plumbing permit and an inspection — we pull it. The inspector looks for the details that protect your home: a drain pan and drain line under any heater installed in an attic or over finished space, a thermal expansion tank, a correctly run temperature-and-pressure relief discharge, proper venting on gas units, and secure connections. Older installs often need one or more of these brought up to code; a quote that skips them isn’t cheaper, it just fails inspection later.
A like-for-like tank swap is the most economical and the fastest. A tankless unit gives endless hot water and frees floor space but often needs a bigger gas line and new venting. A heat-pump (hybrid) electric tank is very efficient but tall and needs air space.
