Water you can’t stop at the fixture. Shut the main — at the meter box by the street or where the line enters the house — then call.

A tank leaking from the body itself can’t be repaired. Close the cold-water valve on top of the heater and cut its power or gas.
Check a neighbor first. If it’s only your home, suspect a main-line break or a failed valve — and check the yard and meter for pooling.
